Manchester United vs Newcastle
Manchester United hosts Newcastle United in a very dicey game at the Old Trafford this weekend. Both sides are swimming in troubled waters coming into this game. Whilst Manchester United is trying to solve their issues, Newcastle would be seeking for their first win this season. Below are our thoughts on this game.
Manchester United
Late kickoff on Saturday evening sees two managers in dire need of saving take on each other. The not so scary red devils would be taking on Newcastle who have had a very dreaded start so far. victory for any of these teams doesn’t necessarily guarantee the end of their problems though.
Manchester United return from their midweek engagement in the champion’s league. They played out a goalless draw with Valencia in a match that saw Manchester United looking far from special. They, however, had few glimpses of hope from players like Rashford, Pogba and Sanchez during the 90 minutes of play.
They have now gone four games without a win in all competitions. They have also managed just four wins in 10 matches this season. This stats also saw them exit of the Carabao cup, with many hinting that Jose might leave the club soon. This is also their worst start to a season since the 1980’s.
Newcastle United
Rafael Benitez, manager of Newcastle is surprisingly not facing the sack threat like Mourinho even though their situations are similar. The Magpies have failed to record a win in any of their last 8 competitive games this season. They have lost five games whilst picking just two points from 21 points in seven games.
Majority of the blame has been directed at club owner Mike Ashley, although the players and manager aren’t left out. Newcastle lost their last game to Leicester at home by 2 goals to nil just after drawing with crystal palace. The seemingly easier fixtures were supposed to offer them success after a very difficult start to the season. This has however not been the case as they seem to perform even poorly against the lesser teams.
On a lighter note, the Magpies did lose all four of their league games against top six teams in quick succession. They have however managed to find the back of the net in each of those games but still losing by a narrow margin of 2-1. In all of those games, they did give a good account of themselves. And this game should see them up their performance once more even though that hasn’t been enough recently.
head to head
• The Magpies haven’t had victory in their last 36 trips to Old Trafford, losing 26 of those outings. Manchester United definitely have history on their side.
• The red devils have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six meetings with the Magpies.
• Newcastle has won just two of their 42 away matches in Manchester in the premier league. Last time they defeated man city and man Utd was in 2000 and 2013 respectively winning by a lone goal on both occasions.
Key stats
• Newcastle has lost seven premier league matches against Manchester United when they have scored first.
• The away side are without a win in this seasons competition.
