Europe – Champions League

Ajax – Real Madrid

Ajax found themselves drawn into a champions league group alongside football power houses like Bayern Munich and Benfica. The Dutch side were exactly favorites to make it through the group stages but after a great start to the campaign. They defeated AEK Athens by 3 goals to nil and drew with Munich at the Allianz arena.

It’s also impressive to state that they are amongst the 5 teams to stay unbeaten through the group stages. They were adrift 1st place by just 2 points. The fact that they finished in 2nd place has resulted in this draw against Real Madrid. Bayern Munich finishing 1st didn’t change their fate too as they now prepare to take on Liverpool.

In recent weeks, the host have struggled this is seen in their very recent loss to old rivals Feyenoord 6-2. Just this Saturday, they also lost to Heracles. However, their home form has been impressive as they have lost just once in 21 European games at home.

Their visitors Real Madrid, the competitions favorites for the past 3 editions and they did win the title last time out. Though things seemed pretty rough at the start of the season, it sure looks like Santiago Solari has gotten his acts right. He took over after Los Blanco suffered 4 defeats in 5 games but has since lost just 4 times in all 25 competitive games.

They head into this game with their heads held high after an impressive performance and a 3-1 win over arch rivals Atletico Madrid. With Saturday’s game in the bag, they are currently on a run of 7 games without a loss while winning 6 of those. These 7 matches have seen Solari’s men find the net 20 times.

Both teams to score

Tottenham – Borussia Dortmund

Spurs despite their injury troubles certainly look in good shape to get past this German team. The host have won 11 of their last 15 matches since the group stages came to a halt, their win against Leicester City makes it 3 consecutive wins.

Dortmund are by no yardstick a small team although they somehow threw away a 3 goal lead to see their game at the weekend end 3-3 against Hoffenheim. However, they remain at the top of the Bundesliga table as they look to beat Bayern Munich to the title.

Unlike their host, Dortmund, we’re souring high during the group stages and finished with a 7 point gap off the 3rd placed team Club Brugge. There was really no doubt the would make it to the next round.

The last few weeks have seen the visitors drop points against Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt and they lost on penalties to Werder Bremen. Dortmund would be hoping to get back on track as they pursue champions league success.

The game is shaping up to be an entertaining affair as the home side have found the net in 23 of their last 25 matches. They have also managed just 1 clean sheet in their last 7 outings and here they come up against a side who have scored 12 times in just 4 matches.
