Welcome to match day 3 of the UEFA champions league 2018/19 campaign. In this post we would be looking into Manchester United’s clash with Juventus as Cristiano Ronaldo makes a return to his former team. Shakhtar also take on Manchester city as city look to cement their spot at the top of their group. Real Madrid would be looking to turn things around as their season looks to be going from bad to worse. Read on for more on these fixtures.

Manchester united – Juventus

It’s been one hell of a season for the united fans as their season continue to look like a rollercoaster ride with no telling what could come next. In their last fixture, they came from behind to almost nick a winner before a stoppage time goal saw the blues get back on level terms. Against Newcastle, it was a similar storyline as they came from two down to win the match by 3 goals to two. United have found a way to get in the game only when they find themselves in the back foot. For this game that wouldn’t be a very good approach.

Visitors Juventus are coming into this match after winning their first two matches against the young boys and Valencia. In the Serie A, they dropped points for the first time this season against Genoa. For this game they would have the help of Cristiano Ronaldo who returns from suspension same time as he makes a grand return to his boyhood club. He has scored 5 times in 10 appearances so far but has none in his competition due to his suspension, I think he would be looking to change that. Even though Manchester United’s manager has been seen as a defensive minded coach that has not really been the case as 80% of their fixtures so far have seen both teams scoring.

Both teams to score

Shakhtar – Manchester city

The host would still have memories of last season’s win over Manchester city in Ukraine and that saw city loose three points at the start of December. They would be looking to repeat the feat with city looking quite shaking in the champion’s league at the moment. This encounter might however be a different tale as city already sit on top of the group. The last encounter between these sides saw man city field a team that wasn’t at full strengths. Shakhtar haven’t lost any of their last 7 encounters at home to English opposition. This champion’s league season hasn’t seen them get to full strength as they drew 2-2 against both Lyon and Hoffenheim.

Pep’s champion’s league plot hasn’t gone according to plan so far as they lost to Lyon at home on match day 1. They also found themselves scoring a last minute decider as they beat Hoffenheim in a closely fought affair. However, with just 2 draws and 1 defeat from 12 games they don’t look, like a side who are struggling. Their backline has looked pretty solid in the league this term but in the champions league it’s been a different story.

City have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 5 champions league games and have conceded 15 goals in 12 games since the start of last season. Shakhtar have scored at least two goals in their last 8 champion’s league home games. The host have also failed to score just once in 11 matches at home in this competition. There are bound to be goals in this match.

Both teams to score and Over 2.5 goals

Real Madrid – Viktoria Plzen

The home side are going through a hell of a chapter as they seem to be dropping point left, right and center. They would be looking to get it right in this game after one of the most disappointing runs in their history. Just over the weekend they lost at home again by levante and desperately need a morale booster before the El classico on Sunday.

Viktoria plzen looks no match for Madrid on paper and considering that the game would be played at the Bernabeu. Real ended a goal drought that went on for seven games as Marcelo scored a consolation goal against Levante. In recent matches, they have a similar story of conceding, creating enough chances but have been unable to level the scores. Having lost 4 in 5 matches so far you can understand their luck.

The Czech side are the lowly ranked side in this group, they have been quite formidable in their league but have been unable to repeat those antics on the big stage.

On match day 1 they lost 5-0 to Roma but still have a point to their name after a draw with CSKA at home. It sure looks like the visitor would be getting their ass whooped with the host looking to make thing right. However, Madrid still look short of fire power as Bale, Benzema squander chance after chance with Isco not completely fit.

Real Madrid -1 (handicap 0:1)

Young boys – Valencia

These two would certainly be going all in this encounter if they are to have any hope of progressing to the next round. The host were always going to find it difficult and may ultimately fall back to the Europa league. This could be their only and best chance to secure a win in this group but so will their opponents.

Young boys already sit 10 points clear at the top of the Swiss league after just 11 games beaten rivals Basel 7-1 in the process. In the champions league however they have lived up to expectations as they have seen consecutive 3-0 defeats from United and most recently Juventus.

Valencia aren’t there yet either, as they have been a very poor source of joy for their supporters and coach alike. They haven’t been able to find the final puzzle in the final third of the pitch. The partnership between newly signed Kevin Gamiero and Mitchy Batshuayi is yet to be well formed and could take much longer.

Defensively the Spanish side look quite solid as 10 out of 11 fixtures’ have seen under 2.5 goals. Meanwhile they have scored just 7 in those outings and would be looking to get maximum points in this one.

Under 1.5 goals in first half
