I’ve been messing around with football pools and betting for years now, and honestly, most people have no clue what they’re doing. Took me about 8 months of bleeding cash before something finally clicked.

You’re Probably Overthinking This
Most punters show up thinking they need some genius-level system with algorithms and spreadsheets that would make NASA jealous. I spent 4 hours one Saturday digging through team formations and injury reports. Lost everything that day.
Next weekend? Kept things dead simple. Just looked at how teams played their last 3 games, checked if it was gonna rain, compared home and away records. Won 6 out of 8.
Night and day difference.
What Actually Changed My Results
Around March last year I started writing down my bets in this super basic spreadsheet, nothing complicated, just what I picked and why and what ended up happening and you’d be absolutely shocked at the patterns that emerge when you bother looking at your own track record.
Turns out I was absolutely garbage at Tuesday night matches. My win rate? Like 31%. But Saturday afternoons? I was consistently hitting 64%. So I just stopped betting Tuesdays altogether.
Yeah, accumulators with 12 legs look incredible when that £5 could become £8,472. But smaller ones with maybe 3 or 4 carefully picked matches? My average return jumped 47% after making that switch.
The Mistake Everyone Makes
Chasing losses destroys people. You drop £20 on Saturday so you throw £40 at Sunday trying to recover. Now you’re down £60. Then £120. Snowballs ridiculously fast.
I set a weekly budget of £50 now. Some weeks I blow through it by Wednesday and then I just stop, which sounds incredibly boring but my account actually grows instead of evaporating.
Finding Patterns That Work
Certain situations exist where the odds are kinda disconnected from reality. Teams playing European matches on Thursday night usually look exhausted that following Sunday. I’ve tracked 23 of these matches last season and the visiting team won or drew 19 times. 83%.
Relegation-threatened teams in their final 5 matches fight like absolute madmen. Made £340 in April just backing underdogs trying to survive.
And weather? Matters way more than you’d think. Heavy rain turns matches defensive. Learned this after betting on an attacking side that drew 0-0 in a monsoon.
Making This Work Long Term
I’ve started treating this whole thing like investing rather than gambling because that mindset shift actually matters. Don’t bet on my favorite team anymore because emotions wreck objectivity. Don’t bet when I’m angry or celebrating. Definitely learned not to bet after drinking.
Keep records. Review monthly. Cut the garbage. Focus on what works.
And nobody wants to hear this part but you’re gonna lose sometimes, even when you’re doing everything right because variance exists and I went 11 days in June without a single winning bet but stuck with my process anyway and things eventually turned around.
