Roony Bardghji: Copenhagen’s teenage sensation facing Manchester City

When Manchester City faced FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday, one of the biggest threats was thought to be the teenage right winger, thanks to his decisive goal against Manchester United in the group stage. With his constant threat, those hovering readily over the football in-play betting odds would likely have been considering a bet on this youngster – capable of scoring at any given time.

Born in Kuwait to Syrian parents, Roony relocated to Sweden with his mother and brother at the age of six, later reuniting with his father. His footballing journey led him through various clubs, including Kallinge SK, Rodeby AIF, Malmo, and ultimately, in 2020, to Copenhagen.

By the time his transfer to Copenhagen was confirmed on his 15th birthday, Roony had already earned a huge amount of attention in Scandinavia. Since then, with an impressive record of 12 goals in 49 league games, he has more than proven his worth.

Keeping a level head and a grounded approach has been essential for Roony’s development – especially considering the widespread attention he attracted in his youth days. Jeffrey Aubynn, Roony’s under-19s coach at Malmo, has been nothing but positive about his attitude – complimenting him on his humble work ethic and showing a strong belief in his abilities. He has also commented on Roony’s continuous development since leaving Malmo, highlighting his technical prowess.

An Old Head on Young Shoulders

Roony is now well accustomed to playing at a level beyond his age – and has continually demonstrated his passion for football and desire to succeed since he was just a boy. During his time at Rodeby, Fredrik Akesson, his coach at the time, recalls Roony’s impact on the pitch, describing his world-class moves, stylish assists, and impressive goals. Akesson saw, even back then, Roony’s potential even when playing alongside and more experienced older teammates.

Transferring to Malmo, one of Sweden’s biggest clubs, Roony’s versatile skills made him stand out from the rest. Despite serious efforts to keep him in the club, Roony went on to play for Copenhagen.

At just 16, Roony became Copenhagen’s youngest-ever player, and he earned wide acclaim for his unique talents. Danish journalist Nicklas Degn, described Roony as one of Scandinavia’s greatest talents – and even predicted a future move to one of the top Premier League clubs. With an ability to unbalance opponents, dribble his way through the field, and use his body perfectly, he has qualities that even teams such as Manchester City are wary of.

Although he may just be at the beginning of his journey, Roony has already shown that he belongs on the biggest football stage. Success is an ongoing journey and Roony’s promising career is unfolding step by step – and we can’t wait to see where he ends up.

Other Teenage Sensations

Alongside Roony, there have been a number of other teenage football sensations who have captured the football world’s attention with their world-class talent and performances.

Erling Haaland

Manchester City’s Norwegian striker has been a goal-scoring sensation all his career – since his teenage days back in Borussia Dortmund. Known for his clinical finishing and physical prowess, Haaland’s ability to find the back of the net consistently has made him one of the most sought-after young talents in football.

Kylian Mbappe

The star of Paris Saint-Germain burst onto the scene with his lightning speed, skillful dribbling, and goal-scoring skills. The French forward played a major role in France’s 2018 World Cup win and remains a key player for PSG.

Jude Bellingham

Another teenage sensation who started his journey at Borussia Dortmund is Bellingham. This English midfielder is famous for his composure on the ball, vision, and mature playing style. Despite his young age, he is a regular in both club and international competitions.

Ansu Fati

The Barcelona forward from Spain has shown serious promise with his impressive style of play. Fati became Barcelona’s youngest-ever goalscorer – and he continues to be an exciting prospect for both his club and the Spanish national team.

Rooney has the world at his feet – and it’s exciting to see exactly where he will go from here. Will we see him coming over to the English Premier League? Who knows. Maybe one day he will be playing for Man City rather than against them!
