ANALYSIS AND MATCH PREVIEW

BATE begin the new European adventure on Wednesday when they host HJK in the second round of the Champions League qualifications. The Belarusian champions are favourites both on the night and over two legs, but HJK are anything but a naïve rival and it will by no means be one-way street for Alexej Baga’s men. Both teams head into the tie in a decent competitive form being midway through seasons in their domestic leagues.

Interestingly, both sides are seven points clear at the top of the standings at the halfway point of campaigns in Premier League and Veikkausliiga.

The only difference is that HJK had to play the first qualifying round in the Champions League where they eased past Faroese Vikingur, winning both legs and advancing 5-2 on aggregate.

BATE have been much more successful at this level in the past couple of years. They eased past Finnish opposition SJK in the opening round of the 2016/17 campaign 4-2 on aggregate, just a year after featuring the Champions League group stage.

They were unlucky to suffer an early elimination to Slavia Prague on the away goal rule (2-2 on aggregate) last year. Nevertheless, BATE went on to play the Europa League group phase where they could not advance into the knockout round past the likes of Arsenal, Red Star Belgrade and Koln.

HJK have a much more modest European experience in the last decade. They did regain the title in Veikkausliiga after three years in the previous term. The head coach Mika Lehkosuo will telly on his team’s form here as Klubi will come into this off the back of four consecutive wins in all competitions

BATE are very tough to break down in their own backyard and they’ve lost just one of last nine home games in the Champions League (to Barcelona). Therefore, backing them to record a win here looks like a great move.
