The Round of 16

The round of 16 (knockout stages) commences on the 30th of June and terminates on the 3rd of July, and Russia 2018 is now beginning to look very interesting. After the conclusion of the group stages, sixteen teams who deserve to be in the next round have emerged.

A quick rundown of teams that qualified and how they made it into the round of 16.

Group A

Russia put up an unexpected performance winning two games and finishing second behind Uruguay who wan all three matches.

Group B

Spain moved into 1st place after edging off Portugal on goals scored. Portugal finished in second place after being held to a one all draw by Iran in the final game.

Group C

France and Denmark were involved in the first game in Russia 2018 to end goalless. Both teams still advanced to the next stage with 7 and 5points respectively with France being the later.

Group D

Croatia stood up tall with 9points, winning all three matches in a group which was arguably the group of death. Argentina being on just one point from two games needed a win to advance . And so did Nigeria and Iceland with 3points and one point respectively. In the end, Argentina qualified after beating Nigeria who were Eliminated alongside Iceland.

Group E

Brazil put up a good performance as they failed to lose in all three matches. Winning two and drawing one game (7 points) against Switzerland who drew two and won one game to finish second with 5points.

Group F

Sweden powered through winning South Korea and shockingly Mexico. They qualified in first place with 6 points ahead of Mexico with goals scored. This group saw Germany , defending champions get eliminated at the group stage. This has been the trend in recent world cups.

Group G

Coming into the final game England sat in first place on fair play rule (fewer yellow cards) after being tied with Belgium on points, goals scored and goals conceded. After 90mins , the Belgians won by a lone goal to see them finish top of the group and face Japan in the round of 16.

Group H

Senegal had a chance to qualify but lost its final game against Colombia who needed a win to qualify. Having same points as Japan (4points), with same goals for and goals against , Senegal were eliminated due to the fair play rule.

Considering how teams fared during the group stage here’s a market in which one could place a bet considering how each grouped fared. Some teams have had to become tougher coming into this stage while some have paved a way for themselves by finishing first and getting favorable opponents in this round.
